Facebook names Colin Stretch Vice President and General Counsel

MENLO PARK, Calif. – June 20, 2013 – Facebook announced today that Vice President and Deputy General Counsel Colin Stretch has been named Vice President and General Counsel of Facebook, effective July 5, 2013. In this position, Stretch will oversee Facebook’s legal and security departments.

“Colin has been an instrumental leader on the Facebook legal team and has earned the trust and confidence of management, the Board of Directors and our entire company. We are very excited to have him as our new General Counsel,” said Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer of Facebook.

Stretch has been a senior leader on Facebook’s legal team since joining the company in 2010. As Deputy General Counsel, Stretch has led many of Facebook’s most significant legal initiatives. Stretch served as lead negotiator for the company’s settlement with the Federal Trade Commission in 2011. He led the appellate victory in the high-profile Winklevoss case, and has led the team that advises Facebook on legal issues relating to new products.

“Helping advance Facebook’s mission of connecting the world is at the center of our team’s work, and I look forward to the opportunity this new role represents,” said Stretch. “This is an extremely talented group of lawyers, and an awesome responsibility. I can’t wait to get started.”

Stretch will replace Ted Ullyot, who has been Facebook’s Vice President and General Counsel since October 2008. Ullyot previously announced his intention to leave the company on May 10th.

“Colin’s appointment is a testament both to his abilities and to Ted’s leadership. Ted built a strong team at Facebook that we have grown to depend on for world-class counsel, which made promoting from within our company the clear and best choice,” Sandberg said.

Prior to joining the company in 2010, Stretch was a partner at Kellogg Huber Hansen Todd Evans & Figel in Washington DC. He previously clerked for Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer and U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Laurence Silberman, and was an honors program attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School. Stretch is a native San Franciscan who lives in the Bay Area with his wife and children.
